Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
ADEM maintains full GIS functionality with the latest software and hardware. Using Environmental Systems Research Institute’s (ESRI) ArcGIS v.9.0, the Logistics Section can use GIS to track events, create graphics, and assist incident management personnel in developing comprehensive response and recovery measures. The GIS Specialist works closely with the ETeam manager in the emergency information systems section to enhance the overall incident perspective.
GIS has been used for many years in public safety operations but has been shown to be invaluable in emergency response and recovery operations over the past several years. GIS has shown its effectiveness as an emergency response tool in incidents such as the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, hurricane Katrina and the 2007 California Wildfires.
Visualization tools such as Google Earth and ArcGIS Explorer present a picture in 3D that helps operations personnel gain a better understanding of the situation and terrain and enhances situational awareness for firefighters.
