Emergency Management Accreditation Program
what is emap?
The Emergency Management Accreditation Program (EMAP) is a standards-based voluntary assessment and accreditation process for government programs responsible for coordinating prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery activities for natural and human-caused disasters. Accreditation is based on compliance with collaboratively developed national standards, the Emergency Management Standard by EMAP. Accreditation is open to U.S. state, territorial, and local government emergency management programs. Anyone can subscribe to receive standards and guidance materials.
arizona's role
The State of Arizona is among the first in the nation to have its Emergency Management Program fully reaccredited by the Emergency Management Accreditation Program (EMAP); Arizona received initial accreditation in 2004. As a subdivision of DEMA, ADEM is the lead agency for coordinating state resources to reduce the impact of emergencies on persons and property. Achieving reaccreditation means State of Arizona’s Emergency Management Program has met or exceeded nationally recognized standards, and demonstrates that Arizona is prepared and capable of serving its citizens during times of emergency.
Agencies participating in EMAP must demonstrate, through self-assessment, documentation and an on-site assessment, that their program meets the Emergency Management Standard, a set of 63 national benchmarks.
